Today is World Water Day!
Water is mentioned over 700 times in the Bible!
I think this makes water and the Bible
connected, don’t you?
The
first mention of water is found in the second verse of the Bible! “The
earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a
wind from God swept over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2) Even before there was light, there was
water. And even before there was land,
there was water. The first living
creatures came from the water.
And the
final time that water is mentioned is at the end of the Bible; only 4 verses
follow it. “The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let everyone who hears say,
“Come.” And let everyone who is thirsty
come. Let anyone who wishes, take the
water of life as a gift.” (Revelations
22:17)
There must be some spiritual
significance to water for it to both begin and end God’s Word, not to mention
all the passages in between!
Water is important in our own lives. The human body is 95% water. Saltwater oceans make up 71% of the earth’s surface. Water is vital for all known forms of life. We use water for transportation, in industry, and in agriculture. We use water for drinking, laundry, showering and so many other daily needs. Let’s not forget we need water to extinguish fires. And what about all the recreational activities based on water! We just could not live without water! I guess I can see now why it is so important to conserve this precious commodity.
No worries, I won’t be quoting all 719 water Bible verses today! But I would like to share a few with you:
Remember the time that Jesus stopped and
asked for a drink of water from a woman at a well. She asked Jesus where to get that living
water he was speaking of? Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this [well] water will be
thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will
never be thirsty. The water that I will
give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
There
is a famous saying that “cleanliness is next to Godliness”. Although not from the Bible, there are many
other verses supporting this proposition!
Moses was instructed to make a bronze basin for priests to wash hands
and feet before entering the Tabernacle.
Aaron is told to take a bath in water before offering sacrifices. Jesus washes his disciples’ feet before the
Last Supper. And let’s not forget the
use of water by John the Baptist when he said
“I baptize you with water for
repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not
worthy to carry his sandals.” (Matthew
3:11)
Parting
the Red Sea, Moses found floating in a basket, Jesus walking on water, Noah’s
Ark, changing water into wine, and so many others! Water!
I
leave you with this verse, Isaiah
12:3-4:
“With joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation. And you
will say in that day: Give thanks to the
Lord, call on His name…”
Read some of the Bible today and enjoy your spiritual drink of water! It is very refreshing, I promise!
HAPPY WORLD WATER DAY!
